Blood Orange Cranberry Smoothie

I’ll be blunt, this blood orange cranberry smoothie is certainly flavorful, but not on the sweet side, unlike most smoothies.

You see, cranberries are known for being sour and bitter fruits. That’s why it’s usually combined with sweet fruits such as blood oranges, just like this recipe.

Plus, we get the nutritional value of cranberries, so that’s nice.

Also, I based this on a blood orange cranberry muffin recipe—which is really good. You should check it out if you like baking.

In any case, let’s blend it!

How to make the blood orange cranberry smoothie?

I’ll state the obvious, wash the fresh fruits first in cold running water.

To begin, pour the milk into the blender.

As for the blood orange juice, you have two options. You can simply extract the juice or remove the rind and seeds and place it in the blender. Better yet, most blood oranges are seedless, so it should be just as straightforward.

Next, place the rest of the ingredients—banana, marmalade, cinnamon, goji berries—with the frozen cranberries on top.

Blend for 45 seconds to 1 minute or until smooth.

Tips and Substitutions

Naturally, you can use any type of milk—oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, etc.—for this recipe. In fact, you can also use coconut water to add a bit of tropicality to the blood orange cranberry smoothie.

Here’s the thing:

Cranberries are seasonal, so they might not be available by the time you’re reading this.

But wait, here’s the good news:

There are still frozen cranberries that are usually available all year long. If not, then there’s also the option of dried cranberries or also known as craisins.

The secondary sweeteners for this blood orange cranberry smoothie are bananas. Cranberries are sour and bitter fruits, so the natural sugar from other fruits is crucial for this recipe.

Here’s more:

You can also add different sweeteners like maple syrup or simple syrup if it ends up too sour for your taste.
