Breville Juice Fountain Crush

The Juice Fountain Crush is no longer available. It’s been replaced by Breville Big Squeeze, the brand’s one and only cold press juicer.

The Juice Fountain Crush or the Breville BJS600XL is the company’s take on slow juicers. This company sells mainly centrifugal juicers at the time I first wrote this review.

To date, they already have several products that can directly compete with 72-hour shelf life juicing machines. It seems that kitchen equipment behemoth is trying to dominate both the high-speed and cold press juicer market.

It’s not an issue at all, in fact, it’s great for consumers. The more choices we have the better.

All right, let’s get down to the details…

Breville BJS600XL is a vertical masticating juice extractor that is equipped with an Ultem auger and strainer. This juicer is a remedy for those lacking counter space, as it takes up far less area than the horizontal masticating juicers.

It crushes and extracts the juice slowly at approximately 80 RPM. It can handle different types of fruits and vegetables, including hard items such as carrots and grasses like wheatgrass producing excellent quality juice with little pulp.

This quiet juicing machine operates with 240 watts and comes with dual direction control. As you operate the Juice Fountain Crush, the scraper wiper silicon blades spin to remove pulp that might be sticking out of the strainer.

The electric juicer is covered under a one-year limited warranty. However, the motor is also covered under a 10-year induction motor warranty.

Pros

  • Can fit a kitchen of any size because of its highly compact design
  • Super quiet
  • Juice yield is higher producing dryer pulp compared to other Breville juicers
  • Juice can be stored for 72 hours since there is minimal oxidation with slow juicers
  • It has a self-cleaning system—just pour water into the feeding chute between juicing different type of fruits and vegetables, no need to disassemble when rinsing off the residue of the last fruit or veggie you’ve processed.
  • Automatic pulp ejection for continuous juicing
  • It can juice wide varieties of produce such as soft fruits, hard produce, leafy greens, citrus fruits, soybeans and nuts

Cons

  • It’s not BPA free
  • It’s not dishwasher safe
  • This is slightly pricey but I believe the feature justify it
  • It can get clogged which is a hassle, but there’s a reverse button built specifically for this issue
  • Small feeding chute requires a significant amount of your time to cut your fruits and vegetables into small pieces
  • The 1-year warranty is remarkably lower than other masticating juicer brands

Breville BJS600XL Features & Product Details

Is it easy to use?

When you begin to put the Juice Fountain Crush together, be sure to follow the instructions exactly. It will not operate if it is not snapped together properly.

Once you have assembled it a few times, it becomes much easier and will take less than a minute to put together.

The feeding tube on this vertical masticating juicer is smaller, you will need to cut up vegetables and fruits prior to juicing in order to put them down the chute. Allow gravity to work in your favor when placing produce down the tube.

You can use the pusher, but try not to move too quickly as this juice extractor will stop operating if it becomes clogged. Simply turn it off and reverse the direction. Then, push the button to make it move forward again. This helps unclog the juice maker.

The dry pulp is expelled from a separate tube than the juice making continuous juicing possible. The only downside is it’s just way slower than what you expect from other Breville (centrifugal) juicers.

Is it easy to clean?

Breville BJS600XL is a snap to clean. However, the parts are not dishwasher safe, therefore you will need to rinse, and wash it immediately after use to prevent any buildup on the parts.

It comes with a small cleaning brush that can be used to clean the filter basket screen. This will remove bits of pulp that get stuck in it.

Make sure to rinse it before putting the accessories into hot, soapy water to cleanse them. Washing it right away also reduces the time it will take you to clean it.

If you wait, it will take more time to scrub off the bits of produce that will have hardened. Remember; clean it as soon as you have finished juicing to reduce the time needed to clean it.

Don’t take my word for it, watch this official product video of Breville:

Juice Quality

Compared to your standard Breville juicer this product uses a dual stage masticating juicing system by first crushing the produce with the Ultem auger, then pressing it against the Ultem screen yielding the most juice you can extract from the produce.

Since this juicer operates slowly, it allows for less oxidation. This means the juice will keep longer.

If you are going to put it into the refrigerator, you can store it for up to 72 hours. However, make sure it is in a glass container with an airtight lid and fill it completely to the top to keep the oxygen out.

It should be noted that the quality of the nutrients in the juice begins to break down as it sits. The sooner you drink it, the more nutrients you will absorb.

What kinds of produce can the Juice Fountain Crush process?

This juice press can take all types of fruits and vegetables such as hard produce, soft fruits, grasses and leafy greens, citrus fruit, and soaked soy or almond.

Hard produce includes ginger, asparagus, garlic, cilantro, yakon, sweet potato, bitter gourd, celery, apple, fennel, pineapple, turmeric, cucumber, pumpkin, cauliflower, broccoli, coconut, carrots, watermelon, pear, pepper and beets.

Some of the soft produce are mango, peach, cranberries, tomato, papaya, strawberry, pomegranate, blackberry, grapes, melon, avocado and kiwifruit. Juicing soft fruits by the way will yield a puree not a juice. It’s better for making smoothies.

Leafy greens such as peppermint, wheatgrass, pine tree needles, beet greens, spinach, romaine lettuce, collard greens, moringa, kale, brussels sprout, cabbage, parsley, dandelion greens, basil, spring onion and lettuce.

Though this juicing machine can process leafy greens, an 80 RPM vertical masticating juicer is not ideal for juicing wheatgrass and green leafy vegetables on its own. It should be done along with other produce to aid in juice extraction.

Don’t get me wrong here, it still outperforms centrifugal juicers but it’s just not as efficient as horizontal masticating juicers. Newer upright masticating juicers running half that speed (43 RPM) can now process leafy greens and wheatgrass at a more efficient rate.

Citrus fruits include lemon, mandarin, tangerine, grapefruit, lime and orange.

It can also help you make soy and almond milk which certainly adds variety to your juicing routine.

Is Juice Fountain Crush worth it?

Breville Juice Fountain Crush BJS600XL is a reliable, quiet and powerful machine built for loyal Breville fans who would prefer a masticating juicer than the centrifugal product line.

It’s easy to use and setup, and when it comes to nutrient retention it’s at par with all cold press juicers in the market, it’s a slow juicer after all.

With all that said, this juicer is definitely a wise buy.
