As our resident nutritionist, we recently tasked Katie Newton to come up with a protein shake recipe. We wanted something that’s delicious but not rich in calories. And that’s exactly what she did with this mocha chocolate chip protein shake!
Now I love protein shakes! But as we age those calories get harder and harder to work off. The last thing some of us need is an 800 or 1,000+ calorie protein shake like we get at the local Smoothie King.
Katie’s Mocha Chip Protein Shake is an awesome protein shakes for starting your day. Where else can you get a protein shake that has two scoops of protein, a half a banana, chocolate chips, peanut butter, and still clock in at just over 400 calories?
Low Calorie Ingredients for Katie’s Mocha Chocolate Chip Protein Shake
Let’s take a close look at some of the ingredients Katie picked out for this delicious shake:
Ingredient | Calorie Count |
Orgain Chocolate Protein Powder (2 Scoops) | 200 |
Lily’s Dark Chocolate Chips (1 Tbsp) | 25 |
Starbuck’s Cold Brew Coffee (¼ Cup) | 2 |
Lower Calorie Protein Powder
Let’s start with the protein powder. Orgain Chocolate Protein shaves 20 calories per scoop vs similar brands. So with two scoops of Orgain you are saving 40 calories total.
Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Chips
Lily’s Dark Chocolate Chips are sugar free, saving you a lot of carbohydrate-based calories. Just 1 tablespoon isn’t adding a lot but it does add a good bit of flavor to this shake.
Cold Brew Coffee
The cold brew coffee adds hardly any calories at all! Obviously you don’t have to use Starbuck’s cold brew coffee if it isn’t already in your refrigerator. You can substitute it with your own home made cold brew coffee if you’d like.
Peanut Butter Helps Satisfy Hunger
Peanut butter isn’t especially low calorie. But it pulls triple-duty in this mocha chocolate chip protein shake:
- Its high protein and fiber content helps satiate your hunger
- It makes the shake more delicious
- It makes the shake more creamy
Snack or Meal Replacement
Have a low calorie breakfast and then enjoy this protein shake as a mid-morning snack. Or enjoy this shake as a meal replacement. It’s up to you, your specific diet, and your preferences. Either way, this delicious shake allows you some options.
