What is a cold press juicer?
Masticating and triturating juicers are both cold press juicers, all slow juicers are cold press juicers. It’s the collective term for juice extractors which ideally do not produce heat when extracting juice from fruits and vegetables. However, in reality all types of juicers emit a certain amount of heat but not significant enough to cause nutrient breakdown. Many juicing experts refer to slow juicers as cold press juicers, and over time this has been adopted by the juicing community.
Why is it the best juicer?
Cold press juicers produce the highest quality of juice, extremely efficient, and can process a wide range of fruits and vegetables compared to the centrifugal type. The reason why a cold pressed juice can last for 72 hours all boils down to oxidation or breakdown of nutrients. Contrary to popular belief heat is not the main factor which ultimately affects the quality of your juice, but rather it’s the amount of oxygen incorporated during the juicing process.
Fast juicers spin rapidly (from 3,500 RPM to 19,000 RPM) promoting high level of oxidation. If you’ll notice, juice extracted from centrifugal juicers are sometimes too frothy, this leads to a shorter shelf life of just 24 hours. Slow juicing machines on the other hand spins at 40-110 RPM, this slow juicing extraction process mimics the way we chew food. Since it’s slow it doesn’t expose your juice to too much oxygen. Thus, juice extracted from all cold press juicers contain more nutrients, enzymes, and vitamins which can last for 72 hours if stored properly.

What to look for when buying a cold press juicer?
BPA Content
BPA is a toxic substance found in plastic which has been known to cause a number of diseases including cancer. Though FDA released a report that the level of BPA found in plastic items is not significant to cause health issues, it’s still advisable to go BPA free with your juicer.
Dishwasher Safe Parts
Keeping your juicer clean is vital to keep it at its peak performance and washing it right away is highly advisable. This will prevent any build up of residue from your juice. If you can find a model which is compatible with your dishwasher it’s going to be a huge plus.
Ultem Auger (Vertical & Horizontal Masticating Juicer Only)
Auger is the juicing screw which crushes the produce into tiny bits and further squeezes it into the juicing screen to separate the juice from the pulp. It has to be durable, otherwise a few rounds of ultra tough produce such as carrots and beets might break it. Standard plastic were used for older model of masticating juicers, whereas newer machines uses the upgraded GE Ultem auger, eight times harder than a regular polymer.
Ultem Juicing Screen (Vertical Masticating Juicer Only)
Juicing screen is the part which the auger presses the pulp against. It receives significant amount of pressure which can break easily if standard plastic was used to support the metal screen. Models with a non-ultem juicing screen are prone to getting damaged. By the way this issue is only for upright masticating juicers.
Warranty
For me warranty is also a huge factor, it’s the one thing that’s stopping me from getting a Breville juicer. Longer warranty coverage means that you’ll get to enjoy a freshly pressed juice every day without worrying to buy a new one after a year.
Conclusion
Cold press juicers have superior juice quality, can handle all types of produce, and have longer warranty coverage. It’s the perfect juicing machine for serious juicers. With proper maintenance, this type of juice extractor can serve you well for over a decade.
It can also be a perfect choice if you are into juice cleansing. You can prepare your three-day-cleanse in one day then you can enjoy your juice for the remainder of your three day cleanse. It will surely save you a lot of time compared to preparing your juice on a daily basis.
