Masticating juicer (a.k.a. slow juicer or single gear juicer) can process all types of fruits and vegetables, and it’s considered the best juicer for leafy greens such as spinach, wheatgrass, kale, mint, parsley, cabbage, pine tree needles, moringa, etc. With a special attachment it can also help you do other things aside from juicing. It can be a food processor, noodle / pasta maker, homogenizer, grain mill, and it can also help you make an almond or soy milk.

Ranking Criteria and Pricing Info

To guarantee that we are only recommending high quality juicers, each juice press should have a customer rating of at least 4 stars. Here are the ranking criteria I used…

Juice Shelf Life and Nutrient Retention = 5%
Noise Level = 5%
Warranty = 10%
Price = 15%
Rating = 35%
No. of Reviewers = 30%

Approximate prices based on Amazon.com

$ = juicers under $100
$$ = juicers under $200
$$$ = $200 to $500
$$$$ = $500 to $1000
$$$$$ = $1000 and above

Pricing may change based on availability, special promotions, and more.. To avoid inaccuracy I created this price range to hopefully help you find the best price for your juicer.

What is a Masticating Juicer?

This is the gear or auger of a masticating juicer

It is a tool for separating juice from fruits and vegetables from its pulp in a process called juicing. It can come in two designs; horizontal and upright or vertical masticating juicers. The efficient low-speed masticating technology presses and extracts juice instead of shredding like high speed juicers do. The juicing screw masticates the fruits and vegetables, breaking down the cellular structure and releasing the nutrients and minerals. This technology minimizes oxidation and preserves nutrients and healthy enzymes, producing a fresh all natural juice which can last up to 72 hours.

How Does it Work?

Here’s a video showing a slow juicer in action.

Pros

  • Up to 10 Years Warranty - The main advantage of masticating juicers is warranty coverage. Slow juicers are not prone to damage unless you drop or break it intentionally, that is why manufacturers can offer longer warranty period.
  • 72 Hours Juice Shelf Life - The efficient low-speed masticating technology presses and extracts juice instead of shredding like high speed juicers do. This technology minimizes oxidation and preserves nutrients and healthy enzymes, producing a fresh all natural juice which can last up to 72 hours.
  • High Nutrient Retention - Minimal oxidation process preserves the nutrients and minerals for a longer period of time.
  • High Juice Yield - Slow juicers produce dryer pulp, squeezing is more effective and efficient than a centrifugal juicer’s grinding/shredding action.
  • Can Juice Leafy Greens- Masticating juicers can juice all types of fruits and vegetables including leafy greens such as kale, mint, wheatgrass, spinach, parsley, cabbage, pine tree needles, and malunggay (moringa).
  • Ideal for Commercial Use - For two reasons I consider masticating juicers good for business; 1.) Juice extracted from it can last up to 72 hours; 2.) It’s backed up by a longer warranty period. If you’re planning to put up a juicing business, you must also consider these two things.
  • Easy to Clean - Though it has more parts than a centrifugal juicer, it’s generally easy to assemble and disassemble and as well as easy to clean.
  • Multipurpose - Masticating juicers comes equipped with non-juicing attachments depending on the brand.
    • Noodle/Pasta Maker - Pasta Nozzles can make homemade spaghetti, linguini, or bread sticks
    • Food Processor - Chop and mince seasonings such as garlic, scallions, red pepper, ginger, etc., and as well as fish and meat
    • Homogenizer - Create fresh frozen desserts (ice cream), natural baby food, and peanut butter with this attachment
    • Grain Mill - Grind black beans, mung beans, white navy beans, cracked soybeans, and coffee beans
    • Blank Screen - Create nutmilk such as soy and almond milk using this attachment. You need so soak your almonds before doing this and additional procedures maybe required for creating soy milk

Cons

  • A Bit Expensive - Slow juicers starts at more than $200 and up to more than $300, but it’s backed by a 10 year warranty.
  • Slow - Aside from the fact that masticating juicers are very slow in terms of extracting juice, longer prep time is also required. You need to chop fruits and vegetables into pieces that would fit in a small feeding chute.
  • I can’t think of any other disadvantages, aside from these two :)
