Beet juice tastes earthy and bitter. Like me, you probably don’t have a good first impression with this reddish-violet drink. However, the more I study about this amazing root vegetable, the more I found how beneficial it is to our health.
Among its many health benefits include lowering high blood pressure, and it supports your liver’s proper functioning.
Here are a few more benefits of drinking beetroot juice.
Beet Juice Benefits
1. Can Help You Manage High Blood Pressure
Based on this research, drinking 250mL or 8.4oz of beet juice daily can lower your blood pressure. Nitrates found in beets convert to nitric oxide, which relaxes the blood vessels.
2. May Support Your Liver
Poor diet, exposure to toxic substances, and a sedentary lifestyle are major risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This condition may progress to a more serious disease process if not managed early on.
Besides improving your diet, exercise, and limiting your exposure to toxic substances, you can help your liver by drinking beet juice.
Beets contain betaine, a compound that helps prevent and reduce fat build-up in the liver.
3. Can Prevent Cancer
Betalains gives beetroot its reddish-violet color. It’s a water-soluble antioxidant that has the potential to fight cancer cells, according to this study.
4. May Slow the Progression of Dementia
As we have discussed above, nitrates relax the blood vessels. This therapeutic effect extends to the brain. Based on this study, a high-nitrate diet can improve blood flow to the brain’s frontal lobe. This has the potential to slow down cognitive decline among older adults.
5. It Can Fight Inflammation
Aside from betalain’s cancer-fighting ability, it also may have anti-inflammatory properties. A study involving participants with osteoarthritis showed reduced pain and discomfort after taking beetroot extract.
This study doesn’t involve beetroot juice, though. More research needs to be conducted to verify its anti-inflammatory properties.
6. Reduce Cholesterol
Beet juice has the potential to lower your cholesterol levels. According to a 2011 study on animals, beetroot extract has been found to minimize bad cholesterol and triglycerides and increase good cholesterol levels.
7. Good source of Nutrients
Beet is a good source of potassium, iron, folate, magnesium, manganese, sodium, zinc, copper, and selenium. Consuming beets regularly can help you reach your recommended daily allowance for these vitamins and minerals.
8. Improve Stamina
If you have an active lifestyle, you might want to incorporate cold-pressed beets into your diet. Based on a 2012 study, drinking beetroot juice can improve your physical performance.
