The Apple Cranberry Steel Cut Oats highlights a rich creamy texture with the all-time favorite apple cinnamon combination (and cranberries too).
Better yet?
Just like the cherry almond overnight oats, it’s perfect as a meal prep the day before. Despite having a 3 hours cooking time, it’s still pretty straightforward to make.
In that case, let’s get cooking!
Just so you know, this recipe is inspired by Lauren Sharifi.
How to make the Apple Cranberry Steel Cut Oats?
Note: This recipe requires a slow cooker.
Since we are going to use a slow cooker, make sure to thaw any frozen ingredients first.
The only other component that requires preparation is the apple. In that case, go ahead and dice it. (Don’t forget to wash it in cold running water.)
Add all the ingredients and cook on low for 2-3 hours. You’ll know it’s done if the oats have absorbed the liquids. Depending on your slow cooker, it may take longer (including the preheat time).
After that, it’s just a waiting game. That’s how easy it is!
Once the cooking is done, let the apple cranberry steel cut oats cool first (approximately 30 minutes). Then, you can store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge overnight.
You can also eat it while hot; however, since it’s a slow cooked breakfast recipe, it’s ideal to make it the day before. Unless you want to wake up 3 hours before your actual alarm, no one wants that.
Anyway, in the morning, serve it in a bowl with the toppings of your choice.
Tips and Substitutions
Here’s the deal:
Steel-cut oats need to cook longer than regular oats. While the apple cranberry steel cut oats recipe is doable with rolled oats, you should use the stovetop instead as it will cook faster.
If you don’t like cranberries, you can skip it too. Just note that the cranberries balance out the sweetness of the rest of the ingredients.
On top of all that?
Just like smoothie bowls, the choice of toppings is endless. Yogurt, fresh fruits like bananas and strawberries, nuts, nut butter, and many more.
